Guide With Tips On How To Paint Like A Pro: Walls, Moldings and Doors // Interior Design Tips

Painting has stood the test of time as one of the most cost-effective ways to transform the beauty and mood of each room. With paint, you can make every room radiate a special feeling depending on your preferences and tastes. Therefore, before you can start your painting job, you must pay attention to how wall paints will affect your mood. Your bedroom should have a color that helps you relax like blue or green, due to their calming effect. Yellow is perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, as it symbolizes sunshine and happiness. It can be painted in hallways to create a welcoming effect as well.

In addition to the mood effect, every freelance interior designer in Dubai should consider the amount of natural light that penetrates to your room and the size of the room. If you have a small room, you can use paint strategically to make your room appear larger. The best paint colors for small rooms are white, grey, cool blue, lavender, yellow and aqua. The success of your project will largely depend on color selection. After making up your mind on the colors that you will use, you must look for the best tools. When choosing the best painting brush, you should look at the quality of bristles and the handle. The bristles should hold and release paints perfectly well while the handle should be easy to grip. Once you are armed with the right colors and the best tools, you can now start your painting jobs.

1. Plan your work

You should visualize how you would like your walls to look once you finish painting. If you intend to use several colors, you should know where each color will be painted for a flawless appearance based on how they complement each other. Make sure that you have all the necessary tools to complete the project. You will need to have paint, paint roller, drop cloths, paint roller extension pole, sandpaper, paint tray, paint brushes, painter’s tape, rags, and putty knife.

2. Prepare walls and the room

Wet paint can easily damage your sofa, curtains, and furniture. It is best you empty the room of all your things. If you have a large space, you can put all things in the center away from your walls and wrap them with a drop cloth or plastic sheeting. It is prudent to cover your floors to protect them from paint + splatters. A painters tape will help you seal off corners, base and crown moldings. You can also use the tape to protect switches and outlets from paint drips. Make sure that you have a good seal for a clean appearance once the paint gets dry. If your walls have cracks, we recommend that you use a sealant to smoothen the walls.

3. Mix your paint and start painting

Use a wooden paint stick to mix the paint. Re-stir it often during the project to endure that the paint is evenly mixed throughout. When painting, begin with the light-color walls. Always start with the light colors whenever you are painting as the dark colors will hide the spots that get on the accent wall. After that, wait for the paint to dry before applying the second paint. It is advisable to cover the edges of the light color to keep the dark color from bleeding on to your new paint. If you are planning to use a brighter hue on dark walls, you should apply the primer and then two coats of the new color.

Important Note: We highly recommend that you paint one wall at a time from top to bottom. If you are using a roller, use long strokes in a W pattern. Once the wall becomes dry to touch, it will be safe to apply the second coat. You should as well ensure that your home is well ventilated. Before starting the project, open windows, and doors. A quick tip is to warm the room to quicken the drying process. It is helpful to choose a warm day for painting as a damp day will increase the time the paint will need to dry.

Once you finish applying all coats, you should remove all painter’s tape as well the drop cloths. Make sure that the spills are dry before moving the drop cloths. The last painting step is to clean all your tools. For oil-based paints, you will need mineral spirits. For water or latex-based paints, you will need water and soap.

How To Paint Moldings Like A Professional: Quick, Easy Guide

1. Clean the molding

Use a mild household cleaner and a rag to wash the molding to get rid of grease, dirt, and oil. Have with you a sandpaper as well to sand bare spots and a vacuum to remove sanding dust from the molding.

2. Prepare the molding

Once the molding is clean, mask off your floors, walls, and ceiling with a painter’s tape. If the molding has seams, you should apply a clear acrylic caulk. For nail holes and other imperfections, you can use wood putty.

3. Paint the molding

Start with the edges before painting the middle section. Move the brush smoothly in a straight line to ensure clean edges. When painting the middle section, use long brushstrokes that are even to eliminate brush strokes for a better result.

How To Paint A Door Like An Expert

1. Prepare the door

Use a cleaner to remove grease from the door and doorknobs and fill holes and dents with sandable filler. You will need to use sandpaper to roughen the surface for better application of primer.

2. Paint the door

You can apply the primer on patched dents, but it is better to prime the whole door for a more uniform finish. Painting your door is an intense project as you will have to paint and smooth it before the paint becomes sticky. You can use paint additive to slow drying. When painting, you should start with the four edges before painting the faces of the door. If you need a perfectly smooth finish, we recommend that you opt for a sprayed-on finish.

Wrap Up

Every professional freelance interior designer in Dubai understands the importance of thorough preparation. You should make sure everything you need is accessible before starting the project as delays in-between work can alter the outcome. Ensure that you have the best tools and protective clothes before starting the project as well. It is also beneficial to paint in dry weather as humidity increases drip and slows drying.
